No place offers the opportunity to delve deeply into Southern Thai culture quite like the Institute of Southern Thai Studies, which is certified by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as an outstanding cultural and historical attraction since 2000. Established in 1978, this institute spans an area of 23 rai and features architecture characteristic of the Southern region. It consists of four buildings, each divided into various rooms that showcase the history, ethnic diversity, and ancient artifacts that reflect the wisdom of the local communities. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including traditional weapons unique to the South, such as the kris, the flag pole knife, and the chicken tail knife. The institute also features displays of local weaving traditions, including Phumriang and Pattani fabrics, and showcases rare coconut grater designs. Additionally, there are exhibits on traditional folk performances, such as Nang Talung (shadow puppetry), Norah, and Pak Li Ke, as well as rooms dedicated to the Southern way of life. Here, you can find demonstrations of children’s games like Sudra and kite flying, as well as traditional rites of passage, ancient healing practices, and more. The institute also provides amenities for tourists, including guest rooms, seminar rooms, and a shop selling local handicrafts such as Paju weaving, Pahan weaving, and Koh Yao textiles, as well as products made from seashells, coconut shells, and silverware. The observation point at the institute offers picturesque views of Songkhla Lake. Location: It is situated in Moo 1, Ban Ao Sai, in the Ko Yao area, near the second section of the Tinsulanond Bridge. Open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, admission prices are 30 baht for adults, 10 baht for children, and 60 baht for foreign visitors (30 baht for foreign children). Turn left at the Nam Kratai intersection and continue on Route 4146 towards Ko Yao, near the second section of the Tinsulanond Bridge, or take a local bus from the clock tower in the town and transfer to a motorcycle taxi at the intersection.
