The National Museum of Satun, also known as the Gudden Mansion, is located on Satun Thani Soi 5, directly opposite the Satun Provincial Land Office. It was constructed in 1898 and completed in 1916 by Phaya Bhuminarat Phakdi, or Tuan Ku Baharuddin Bin Tamahong, the governor of Satun during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. This mansion was originally built as a residence for King Chulalongkorn during his visit to southern Thailand, although he never actually stayed overnight. It served as a guesthouse and the city hall of Satun, making it an important site for local governance. In 1997-2000, the Fine Arts Department declared the mansion a national historical site and undertook renovations to transform it into the National Museum of Satun. The building is a two-story brick and mortar structure designed in a Western style, featuring arched doors and windows influenced by European architecture. Its roof is decorated in the traditional Thai style, covered with terracotta tiles shaped like banana leaves. The window frames consist of small wooden slats arranged in a horizontal pattern, and the upper air vents are adorned with star motifs in keeping with Islamic architectural characteristics. Inside, the museum showcases the history of Satun and highlights the lifestyle of its residents, including the sea nomads of Koh Lipe, pottery making, the residence of the governor of Satun, and the cultural heritage of the Thai Muslim community. Visitors can learn about the local customs, traditions, and way of life. The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and closes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and public holidays, operating from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The entrance fee is 30 baht for foreign visitors and 10 baht for Thai citizens. For more information, you can call 0 7472 3140.
