Phra Mahathat Chedi Traiphop Traimongkhon

Koh Hong, Hat Yai

Most of the stupas in Thailand, dating from the Sukhothai period to the present, are constructed primarily of brick and mortar. However, there is a unique stupa made from different materials, which is the "Stainless Steel Stupa" located in Hat Yai. This stupa is recognized as the first of its kind in the world. Officially named "Phra Mahathat Jetiyā Traiphop Traimonkon," most people commonly refer to it as the "Stainless Steel Stupa" or "Stainless Steel Temple." The Stainless Steel Stupa is situated atop Khao Hong Hill on Punnakarn Road, in Koh Hong, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. This remarkable structure was built to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the occasion of his 60th anniversary on the throne, serving as a central point for the promotion of Buddhism, Thai culture, and traditions. The foundation stone was laid on February 28, 2006, and it took just 160 days to complete. The stupa is crafted from numerous stainless steel rods of varied sizes, arranged in a triangular form that gleams in silver, especially when it catches the sunlight. The pinnacle of the stupa is adorned with a spherical design resembling the "Phana Chai" with a chhatra at the very top. The base is composed of circular brick structures coated with gold paint, featuring circular doorways that allow visitors to enter and explore the beautifully designed interior, which also incorporates stainless steel elements. Inside, there are eight door openings, corresponding to the days of the week (with two doors for Wednesday, one for day and one for night), each housing a Buddha image for worship. A spiral stainless steel staircase leads to the second level, where visitors can take photographs and admire the stupa's architectural structure and various decorative elements, as well as make merit with the stainless steel alms bowls available. The second-floor base also offers a balcony for scenic views, although it is typically locked for public access. In addition to the stupa, there are Buddha statues, footprints of the Buddha, and a statue of Guanyin, along with other intriguing features for visitors to pay their respects and appreciate. Every month on the 7th, 17th, and 27th at 10:20 a.m., the stupa hosts a public offering ceremony known as "Sangkhatan," further enhancing the allure of this Stainless Steel Stupa. Despite its unconventional materials compared to regular stupas, it exudes beauty and proportion, showcasing a harmonious blend of Buddhist artistry, architecture, and engineering.
