Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine

Sang Ran Chai Khong Road, Mukdahan, Mukdahan Province

The Shrine of the Two Sisters is located on Samran Chai Khong Road, along the Mekong River, just north of Wat Sri Mongkhon Tai and adjacent to the Mukdahan immigration checkpoint. Originally made of wood, the shrine has undergone continuous renovations and is now a concrete structure. The tale of the Shrine of the Two Sisters dates back to around 1896 when Chao Fa Ngum of the Lan Chang Kingdom, son-in-law of the king of Intaphat, led his descendants to migrate along the Mekong River. They traveled through Nong Khai and Nakhon Phanom until reaching Mukdahan. Tragically, their boat capsized at the mouth of the Muk River, resulting in the deaths of the two daughters named Princess Pima and Princess Lomphama. In 1770, Chao Kinri established the city of Mukdahan and built the Wat Sri Mongkhon Tai temple. During construction, a statue of the Iron Buddha was discovered buried in the ground at the site where the Shrine of the Two Sisters now stands. The statue was then moved to the temple, but the following morning, it reappeared at its original location. The local villagers began to refer to it as "Phra Lhub Lek". Additionally, on the 11th night of the 6th lunar month each year, the sound of two women crying can be heard in the vicinity, believed to be the voices of Princess Pima and Princess Lomphama demonstrating their miraculous presence. Chao Kinri learned about the history of this site and erected the shrine in 1772 to allow the spirits to reside there. It was named the "Shrine of the Two Sisters" and has since become a revered site for the people of Mukdahan. Annually, during the month of May, ceremonies of respect and offerings are held at the shrine. The Shrine of the Two Sisters is considered a sacred place, alongside the shrine of Chao Por Chao Fa Muang. Those who pay their respects to Chao Por Chao Fa Muang also make a point to honor the Shrine of the Two Sisters. Each year on the 15th night of the 6th lunar month, Mukdahan province hosts joint ceremonies to honor both Chao Por Chao Fa Muang and the Shrine of the Two Sisters simultaneously.
