เป็นจังหวัดชายแดน อยู่ในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบนของประเทศไทยตั้งอยู่ในแอ่งสกลนคร และอยู่ในกลุ่มจังหวัดภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบน แยกออกมาจากจังหวัดนครพนมเมื่อวันที่ 27 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2525 นับเป็นจังหวัดที่ 73
