Phrae City Pillar Shrine

Khum Dern Street in Wiang, Phrae City.

The City Pillar of Phrae Province is located in the heart of Phrae city, also known locally as "Mueang Pae," on a street called Khum Daem. It is situated adjacent to Nari Rat School and near the provincial hall. This new City Pillar was established following the Ministry of Interior's policy. In the past, this area was referred to as "Sadu Mueang" and was a lush green space with large trees. It housed a small shrine revered by locals, known as "Tuab Phi." Over time, the large trees were removed, and a stone inscription discovered at the abandoned Wat Si Bun Reang, near the Phrae provincial prison, was brought here. This inscription, written in Old Thai language, references the establishment of Wat Si Bun Reang during the reign of Phra Khun Ramkhamhaeng the Great. Consequently, this inscription became the foundation of Phrae's City Pillar. Later, in 1992, the decision was made to construct a proper City Pillar building made of brick and mortar as directed by the Ministry of Interior to ensure that provinces without City Pillars could establish their own and enhance existing ones. The province of Phrae constructed its new City Pillar from wood from the Yang tree, the provincial tree, and renovated the old shrine into a new building featuring a cruciform design. On March 3, 1993, the new City Pillar shrine was completed, showcasing beautiful Lanna-style architecture with gilded decorations. It consists of large teak pillars embedded in plaster walls, creating an elegant and suitable place to uphold the city’s principles. The original stone inscription, which served as the City Pillar, remains placed behind the newly constructed pillar in the shrine. Anyone visiting Phrae should consider the City Pillar shrine as their first destination. It’s a wonderful place to pay respects and seek blessings for a prosperous journey, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the charming province of Phrae.
