Luang Temple is the first temple in the walled city of Phrae, showcasing precious art and architecture that reflects the various eras that have influenced the city over time. The intricate Lanna-style archway, the vihara housing the Sukhothai-style Phra Chao Saen Luang, and the Chedi of Chai Chang Kham display a harmonious blend of Sukhothai and Lanna influences. The unique fruit-shaped finials atop the chedi exemplify the distinctive craftsmanship characteristic of Phrae. The sculptural details, including the Naga staircase leading up to the chedi, add to the rich local artistic heritage of Phrae, all created with pure devotion. As I walked through the tranquil past, the sounds of traditional music—the soft strumming of the khaa soa, the gentle notes of the seung, and the tunes of the pee—fill the air, continuing to bring joy to the people of Phrae even today. Ceremonial events, whether auspicious or otherwise, are observed with perfect timing and respect to tradition.
