Wat Sar Baw Kaew is a spiritual center for the Burmese community, established in the 19th century and built entirely from teak wood. It features spaces for both the Buddhist congregation and the monastic community within the same structure, following traditional Burmese architectural styles. Originally, the monks were of Burmese descent, but today, the rituals and customs are largely influenced by the culture of Phrae. Following the events of the Shan rebellion, various ethnic groups have toned down their expressions of identity out of fear of governmental repercussions. Nevertheless, the influences of these different ethnicities have blended seamlessly with the local Phrae culture, resulting in unique characteristics. This fusion is evident in local delicacies such as clear noodle soup, steamed rice with minced meat, and khang hle curry, along with traditional medicinal practices and craftsmanship.

The building is divided into the area for religious ceremonies and the living area for monks following Myanmar architectural tradition.
