During the Greater East Asia War from 1941 to 1945, the powerful Japanese army occupied Thailand and most of Southeast Asia. The Thai government at that time had no choice but to cooperate with Japan by signing a treaty of alliance. However, a group of Thai individuals, both domestic and abroad, joined forces to establish the "Free Thai" movement, believing that over the long term, the Allies would grow stronger and ultimately prevail in the war. The province of Phrae played a significant role in the Greater East Asia War and was closely linked to the Free Thai movement as it was the only province among the 17 northern provinces that had an active Free Thai network. Key members of the Free Thai movement, along with local villagers, used the village of Nong Muang Khai in the Rong Kwan district of Phrae as a base for their operations to save the nation. This event stands as a noteworthy chapter in Thai history, showcasing the contributions of the people of Phrae during a time of crisis. Mr. Pushong Kanthathum, a former member of the Free Thai movement in Phrae, along with descendants of the Free Thai veterans, established the Free Thai Museum at Ban Thong Kuson, located within the premises of the Phra Darun Hotel. The museum collects and preserves the history, virtues, sacrifices, and unity of the brave Free Thai members from the northern region, serving as a memorial and educational resource for those interested. The Free Thai Museum in Phrae is a two-story traditional Thai house consisting of four rooms as follows: **Room 1** - The beginnings of the central Free Thai movement - Stories and histories of key leaders in the Free Thai movement - The office of Mr. Thong Kanthathum, the leader of the Free Thai movement in Phrae **Room 2** - Accounts of the Free Thai personnel in Phrae - History of the Free Thai leaders - An American officer's room **Room 3** - The assembly of the Free Thai members aligned with America - The operations conducted by the Free Thai group aligned with England **Room 4** - Military cooperation between the Free Thai in Phrae and the Allied forces - Negotiations between the Free Thai and the Allies - The destruction of Japan through atomic bombs and the culmination of World War II.
