Wat Chue Chang was originally a Liujiao Shrine established by Mr. Kim Yong, a wealthy philanthropist from Hat Yai, who dedicated land for the construction of a shrine for the public to pay their respects. Later, Master Wei Chong, a monk from Hunan Province, journeyed to Hat Yai and took residence at this shrine. He taught and spread the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, while also renovating and constructing various structures within the site. It eventually became officially recognized as a temple within the Chinese Buddhist community in 1936, named "Wat Chue Chang," which translates to "Temple of Compassionate Merit."
