Bang Pu is a historic Muslim community located by the “Patani Bay,” with roots that trace back over a hundred years. The name "Bang Pu" originates from the abundance of crabs in the area; in the past, this locale was heavily populated with black crabs, a legacy of the mangrove forests found in Yaring. Initially, around 70-80% of the residents in Bang Pu engaged in traditional fishing. This was often accompanied by duck farming and various other occupations. However, in present times, most of the community has shifted towards selling second-hand goods as their main source of income. Nonetheless, there remains a segment of the population that steadfastly clings to traditional fishing practices, including fish farming in cages, crab cultivation in their natural environment, and venturing out to catch shrimp, shellfish, and other aquatic life. When discussing the community of Bang Pu, it is essential to also mention Patani Bay, as it serves as a vital resource and food source for both Bang Pu and neighboring communities. Spanning approximately 74 square kilometers, Patani Bay is characterized by its oval-shaped, curved bay, which opens into the Gulf of Thailand. The bay is bordered by “Cape Tachi” or “Cape Pho,” formed by accumulation of sandy banks that extend parallel to the mainland, effectively separating the Gulf of Thailand from Patani Bay. The residents living around Patani Bay refer to the waters within it as “Lao,” which translates to “inner sea,” while the area of the Gulf of Thailand outside of Patani Bay is called “Lao Lua,” meaning “outer sea.”
