ปัตตานีเป็นหนึ่งในห้าจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งทะเลตะวันออกของภาคใต้สุด ติดกับทะเลจีนใต้ มีภูเขาที่สำคัญได้แก่ ภูเขาทรายขาว ซึ่งอยู่ในทิวเขาสันกาลาคีรี มีแม่น้ำที่สำคัญ 2 สาย คือ แม่น้ำปัตตานีและแม่น้ำสายบุรี ภูมิอากาศอบอุ่นตลอดปี
