เป็นจังหวัดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนล่างของประเทศไทย แต่หากแบ่งตามภูมิศาสตร์ชัยภูมิอยู่จะในเขตภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือด้านตะวันตก หากแบ่งตามลักษณะภูมิอากาศจะจัดอยู่ในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบน และแบ่งตามแบบเขตการปกครองจะจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มภาคอีสานตอนล่าง
