Wat Pho Chai (Luang Pho Phra Sai)

Nong Khai, the city of Nong Khai.

Luang Por PhraSai is a Buddha statue cast during the Lan Chang era. According to the legends passed down through generations, it is said that the three daughters of the Lan Chang king created the statue. Some say that it was the royal daughters of King Chai Chetha Raj who crafted three Buddha images, naming them after themselves: Phra Serm for the eldest sister, Phra Suk for the middle sister, and Phra Sai for the youngest, with their sizes diminishing with age. Originally, Luang Por Phra Sai was enshrined in Vientiane in 1781. During the Thonburi era, it was transferred to the city of Vieng Kham and later returned to Wat Phon Chai in Vientiane. However, during the reign of King Rama III, Prince Anuwong of Vientiane revolted. His Majesty, Prince Bhakra Mahasakpolsepp, led an army to suppress the rebellion and took Phra Suk, Phra Serm, and Phra Sai with him, transporting them from Phu Khwai Mountain on a sturdy bamboo raft along the Ngum River. As they reached the area now known as "Ven Than," a storm hit, causing the raft to break, and Phra Suk was swept into the water. The journey continued past the mouth of the Nam Ngum River until they reached the Mekong River, near Ban Nong Kung in Phon Phisai District. There, a fierce storm roared, and again, Phra Suk sank into the depths of the water, miraculously curing all ailments. This site was thereafter named "Ven Suk," and Phra Suk remains submerged there to this day. Only Phra Serm and Phra Sai were successfully brought to Nong Khai. Phra Serm was enshrined at Wat Phothai, while Phra Sai was placed at Wat Ho Kong, now known as Wat Pradit Tham Khun. Later, during the reign of King Rama IV, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn ordered Khun Worathani and Chao Men (the official) to transport Phra Serm from Wat Phothai in Nong Khai to Bangkok. At the same time, Phra Sai was to be placed on a cart to be taken down to Bangkok. However, when they arrived at Wat Phothai, the miraculous power of Luang Por Phra Sai caused the cart to break, making it impossible to continue. Only Phra Serm reached Bangkok and was enshrined at Wat Pathum Wanaram. Luang Por Phra Sai was then enshrined at Wat Phothai in Nong Khai, where it remains today, earning the nickname "Luang Por Kuean Hak" (the Buddha who broke the cart).
