Phakeng is part of the Phu Laen Kha mountain range. If you travel along the Chaiyaphum-Nong Bua Daeng route, you’ll see a high cliff along the roadside that resembles a crescent moon extending outward, which is why locals call it "Phakeng," meaning "moon" in the Isan dialect. Atop this mountain, you’ll find Wat Phakeng or Wat Chaiyaphum Phitak, where the Phra Buddha Chaiyaphum Phitak is housed. This impressive standing Buddha statue is 14 meters tall. In front of the statue, there is a beautiful viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the expansive rice fields below. Additionally, within the temple grounds, visitors can explore the Phra Boromathat Phakeng and a museum showcasing ancient artifacts. Phakeng is located approximately 36 kilometers from the city center, along Highway 2159 (Chaiyaphum-Nong Bua Daeng). The Phu Laen Kha National Park, situated in Chaiyaphum Province, covers an area of about 92,500 rai and is designated as a protected forest area by law. Established by the Cabinet resolutions on March 10 and 17, 1992, it is an important watershed area, featuring lush forests that serve as habitats for wildlife and are crucial for sustaining natural resources. The park's conservation efforts are supported by local government units, environmental organizations, and the provincial committee responsible for preventing and combating illegal deforestation, which collectively endorsed the establishment of Phu Laen Kha National Park. This area consists of several headwaters and streams that converge to form the Chi River, and it was originally part of the national reserved forests of Phu Laen Kha to the north and south. Phu Laen Kha National Park offers a wealth of attractions, many of which have historical significance, including strategic military sites and the history of Phu Duang Shrine (a hermit figure). Highlights of interest include Tad Hin Lat, Tad Ton Noi, Phu Kham Noi, Phu Klang, Phu Dee, Phakeng, Phaphae, Phakluay, Tham Kluea, Tham Phra, the Chi River, Lat Hin Taek, and various locations for worship, including the Sacred Gate and the beautiful blooming fields of Dok Kra Jiew at Phu Laen Kha National Park, which is well-suited to welcome tourists year-round.
