Phakeang is part of Phu Lan Kha National Park. If you travel along the Chaiyaphum-Nong Bua Daeng route, you'll see a towering cliff at the roadside resembling a crescent moon protruding outward, which is why locals refer to it as Phakeang, meaning "moon" in the Isan language. Atop the hill, you’ll find Wat Phakeang (Chaiyaphum Pitak Temple), which houses the esteemed Phra Buddha Chaiyaphum Pitak, a magnificent standing Buddha statue measuring 14 meters tall. In front of the statue, there is an excellent viewpoint that offers stunning panoramic views of rice fields stretching far into the horizon. Additionally, the temple grounds feature the Phra Borom That Phakeang and an ancient artifacts museum, providing visitors with a glimpse into the rich heritage of the area. Phakeang is located about 36 kilometers from the city center, accessible via Highway 2159 (Chaiyaphum-Nong Bua Daeng). Phu Lan Kha National Park, situated in Chaiyaphum province, spans approximately 92,500 rai and is classified as a protected forest under legal conservation regulation. It also plays a crucial role as a watershed area and a rich habitat for wildlife, featuring diverse flora and fauna. Historically, this area served as a military strategic point and is tied to significant events involving the revered ancestor, Phu Duang. Notable attractions within the national park include Tad Hin Lat, Tad Ton Noi, Phu Kham Noi, Phu Klang, Phu Dee, and several breathtaking cliffs like Phakeang, Phaphe, and Phakluay. Other sites of interest include the Salt Cave, Buddha Cave, and the picturesque Chao Phraya River. With its flowering fields of Dok Krachiao in Phu Lan Kha, the park is well-prepared to welcome tourists year-round.
