Wiang Kum Kam is the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, founded by King Mueang Rai in 1829. It is located southeast of Chiang Mai, approximately 5 kilometers away, and is now an important and fascinating archaeological site! The atmosphere here feels like a trip back in time—peaceful, shaded, and filled with ancient ruins and old temples buried underground due to changes in the Ping River's course hundreds of years ago. Each temple has its own story and beautiful Lanna architecture hidden within. Traveling here is quite convenient. You can drive your own car, or for a more enriching experience, it's recommended to use the services of a tram or horse carriage with a local guide who will narrate the history and share interesting stories along the way. The service fees are reasonable, around 50-100 baht per person for the tram, or about 250-400 baht for the horse carriage. Some visitors also choose to rent bicycles, which gives an adventurous feel! Overall, Wiang Kum Kam is a must-visit place for history and Lanna culture enthusiasts. You are sure to come away with both knowledge and lasting impressions!
