The Kattiya Wongsa (Than) Monument is located at the intersection of the Five-Way Roundabout in front of the Roi Et College of Dramatic Arts, in the Nai Muang sub-district of Roi Et Province. This monument honors a significant figure in the region’s history, Prince Kattiya Wongsa (Than), who was the son of Phra Chao Jaran Kaew, the ruler of Thong. Prince Kattiya Wongsa (Than) was appointed as the first ruler of Roi Et in the year 1775 during the reign of King Taksin the Great. He is recognized as a pioneer in establishing the settlement by relocating people from Thong to the desolate town of Kum Rang, which later became Roi Et, solidifying its foundation. Prince Kattiya Wongsa (Than) demonstrated exceptional governance skills, effectively gathering the populace and revitalizing the city of Roi Et. His leadership led to the area's flourishing growth, ultimately transforming it into a central administrative hub for surrounding provinces. His descendants continued to serve as local rulers, fostering cultural advancements that persist to this day. In recognizing the importance of Prince Kattiya Wongsa (Than), the Roi Et Municipality, with the consensus of the province and local citizens, allocated a budget for the construction of this monument and commemorative site for the first ruler of Roi Et. The municipality sought permission from the Fine Arts Department and was granted approval to erect the monument based on their provided designs. The statue, created in bronze and standing at one and a half times the size of the original, depicts him in a standing pose. The construction contract was awarded to a contractor according to the specifications set by the Fine Arts Department, and the project was completed on September 3, 1999.
