Ahong Temple is a meditation center located in Bueng Kan province, renowned for its beauty and its close proximity to the Mekong River, offering a clear view of Laos across the water. According to legend, it originally started as a monastic site situated within dense forest, leading locals to refer to it as a "forest temple." It was founded by Phra Luang Lun, who passed away in 1963 due to old age. Following his death, no monks resided there permanently; only wandering monks would occasionally visit. However, an elderly nun took it upon herself to maintain and care for the temple until 1974 when Phra Nitesasanakoon (Luang Por Saman Siripanno), the abbot of Bune Ruang Suwannaram Temple in Ban Khampong Peng, Nong Khai, visited to pay his respects to Phra Ajarn Juan Kulshedtho at Jetiyawihan Temple (Phu Tok). On his way back, he noticed a sign for the temple and decided to stop by, where he found only the nun present with no monk in residence. He inquired about the temple’s history, and the nun recounted its story in detail. Luang Por then inspected the temple grounds and found the environment serene, making it an ideal place for monks to practice meditation. Subsequently, he returned to engage the villagers of Ahong in discussions about restoring the temple. The community wholeheartedly supported the initiative and collaborated with Luang Por to improve the surroundings. They constructed a sermon hall, living quarters, and necessary facilities and arranged for monks to reside there. Luang Por Metha Jittakakuttho was appointed as the new abbot, and the temple was renamed "Ahong Silawasa."
