Brief History
จัดตั้งเป็นจังหวัดลำดับที่ 77 ของประเทศไทย เดิมเป็น อำเภอไชยบุรี ในเขตการปกครองของ จังหวัดนครพนม ซึ่งมีที่ว่าการอำเภอ ตั้งอยู่ที่บริเวณปากน้ำสงคราม ไชยบุรี เดิมชื่อ "เมืองไชยสุทธิ์อุตมบุรี"
