Wat Sara Thong is located in the city center on Hai Soek Road, Nai Muang Subdistrict, Mueang Roi Et District, Roi Et Province. This revered temple houses Luang Pho Phra Sang Kachai, a Buddha statue deeply respected by the people of Roi Et. The exact date of its construction remains unclear. In 1782, Phaya Katthiyawongsa (Tao Than), the first governor of Roi Et, stumbled upon this ancient and sacred statue. Recognizing its significance, he brought it to Wat Sara Thong to serve as the spiritual guardian of the town. Historically, every civil servant had to swear an oath of loyalty to the nation in front of this statue annually. Originally named Wat Si Mongkhon, it was the first site to establish a school in Roi Et Province in 2000. The school opened at Wat Si Mongkhon, providing education for students taught by the monks of the temple, with notable figures such as Phra Khru Winai Dhammata and Phra Sing Suwannabol among the teachers. Initially, there were 20 students learning subjects like Thai language and mathematics, using the hall of Luang Pho Phra Sang Kachai as the classroom. Later, Wat Si Mongkhon was elevated to a government school in the province. However, by 1913, the facilities at Wat Si Mongkhon became inadequate due to the growing number of students, and due to space constraints, the school moved to the old district office in the vicinity. Since then, the temple known as Wat Si Mongkhon transformed into Wat Sara Thong, possibly due to local people referring to the pond in the temple as "Sara Thong," which may have inspired the temple’s name. Notably, the water in the Sara Thong pond is considered sacred and is used in various official ceremonies, reinforcing its significance for blessings and auspiciousness. Wat Phan Namthip Thep Phrasith Vanaram welcomes visitors for worship from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily, including public holidays, and does not charge any admission fees.
