One of the important sacred sites in Phatthalung Province, Wat Wang has stood alongside the city throughout the Rattanakosin period. Historically, it was used as a venue for the ceremonial water vow of the officials of Phatthalung in the past, a practice that has since been discontinued. It is believed that this temple was constructed during the early Rattanakosin era, although the exact date remains uncertain. The name "Wat Wang" has two interpretations. One suggests that to the south of the temple lies a deep water reservoir known as "Hua Wang," leading to its designation as Wat Wang. Another explanation indicates that the temple is located near the "palace of the governor of Phatthalung," hence the name. Today, Wat Wang continues to be an important temple for various Buddhist rituals and ceremonies. It also serves as a showcase of exquisite artistry for future generations to appreciate. Some of the most notable features include: - The Ubosot (ordination hall), an architectural gem of the Rattanakosin period, features a traditional Thai roof covered with glazed tiles and adorned with a decorative finial. The front has an extended balcony, and inside, there are stunning frescoes depicting scenes from the Buddha's life and celestial beings. Along the surrounding corridor, 108 sculptures of the Buddha in various postures are meticulously arranged. - The Throne of Dhamma, intricately carved from wood and gilded with floral motifs, was commissioned by King Rama VI for use during the royal cremation of King Chulalongkorn in 1910. - The Dhamma Cabinet, housed in the abbott's quarters, is a square cabinet with lion legs adorned with gilded water motifs interspersed with animal designs, showcasing the exceptional artistry of the early Rattanakosin period. - Two antique jars from the Qing Dynasty, once used in the ceremonial water vow of the officials of Phatthalung, stand as a testament to the temple's rich history. Location: Wat Wang is situated in the Lam Pam district within the Phatthalung Municipality.
