ในอดีต พัทลุง เคยเป็นเมืองที่มีประวัติศาสตร์เก่าแก่แห่งหนึ่ง และยังมีสภาพภูมิประเทศทั้งที่ราบ เนินเขา และชายฝั่ง โดยทางทิศตะวันตกของจังหวัด จะเป็นพื้นที่ที่ราบสูงและที่ราบเชิงเขา อันเนื่องมาจากมีพื้นที่ติดต่อกับเทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช ถัดลงมาทางตอนกลางและทางทิศตะวันออกของจังหวัด จรดทะเลสาบสงขลาจะเป็นที่ราบลุ่ม เหมาะแก่การทำการเกษตรกรรม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการทำนาข้าว ชาวภาคใต้จะเรียกจังหวัดนี้ว่า เมืองลุง
