Wat Phra Pan (the Reclining Buddha of Mae Puka) is located at 64 Moo 5, Ton Pao Sub-district, San Kamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province. It belongs to the Mahayana Buddhist order with a temple area of 4 rai and 16 square wa. The temple complex includes a main hall, an ordination hall, monk's quarters, a prayer hall, and a dining hall, featuring the Reclining Buddha statue and a stupa that contains three strands of the Buddha's hair (although some legends state there is only one strand). According to the legend of the Reclining Buddha of Puka, which is recorded in Northern Thai scripture called "Tamnan Phra Pan," there are two versions: the first and second variants. Most of the content is similar to the more detailed legend of Phra Chao Liap Lok, with 25 sections. This legend is inscribed on palm leaves using Northern Thai script, known as "Khammuang". The story goes as follows: "The Buddha traveled gracefully to a certain location as the sun was setting. He spotted a farmer working on his rice field (referred to as 'pan' in Khammuang). The Buddha approached and stood near the farmer, asking, 'Dear layman, what are you doing?' The farmer looked up, startled, and believed he was seeing a giant. Overwhelmed with fear, he trembled, holding onto his hoe. The Buddha reassured him, 'Do not be afraid, layman. I am the Buddha.' Recognizing the truth, the farmer bowed down in deep respect. The Buddha then said, 'Tonight I shall rest here.' The farmer, with hands clasped, humbly requested, 'O Buddha, may you please rest in my humble hut.' The Buddha replied, 'We will rest here in the rice field and will not go anywhere else.' Hearing this, the farmer hurriedly gathered grasses to spread on the field for the Buddha’s comfort. The Buddha settled on the rice field, and the farmer, having garnered the courage, humbly bowed before Him and said, 'O Buddha, please do not hasten to leave; allow me to offer you alms first.' When dawn arrived, the farmer prepared food and drink for the Buddha and placed them in His alms bowl, at which point the Buddha granted him one strand of His hair as a blessing."
