Wat Phra Ngam

Wat Phra Ngam

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Thailand.

**The History of Wat Pra Ngaam** "Wat Pra Ngaam," originally known as Wat Cha Ram, is located on an island outside the city of Ayutthaya. There is no documented evidence of when or how it was constructed. However, archaeological excavations suggest that the temple's layout reflects the popular design during the early Ayutthaya period, facing east and enclosed by a moat on all sides. The main stupa is situated in front of the assembly hall, which is believed to have been adapted from a previous vihara. This round stupa is constructed on a square base and further elevated on an eight-sided platform. It displays signs of an additional layer of stucco without altering its original shape. The stupa's characteristics can be compared to those built during the early Ayutthaya period and continuing into the late period. The assembly hall is a raised structure with a base surrounding the building, showcasing evidence of construction over an earlier structure. Numerous artifacts, including components of ceramic architecture, stucco, and metal, as well as roof tiles and decorative stucco motifs resembling Nāga, angels, celestial beings, and Chinese nails, have been uncovered during the excavations. Among the religious objects found, there were parts of the Buddha statue, specifically a bronze figure in a meditative posture. Additionally, various tools and utensils were discovered, such as chisels, bowls, and round-bottomed pots—fragments of hard-fired pottery from kilns in Ban Bang Pun, the Menam Noi River, Si Satchanalai, and Sukhothai. Foreign ceramic artifacts included Chinese porcelain from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, along with Vietnamese and Japanese porcelain. The collection of artifacts and architectural styles suggest that the temple dates back to the early Ayutthaya period, specifically between the 19th to 20th Buddhist centuries, extending through to the late Ayutthaya period, around the 23rd to 24th Buddhist centuries. Signs indicate that the temple underwent several restorations and was likely abandoned after the second fall of Ayutthaya in 2310 BE.
