มีความหมายว่า "เมืองงาม" พิจิตรเป็นเมืองเก่าแก่ในสมัยสุโขทัย ปรากฏข้อความในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 ของพ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช และในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 8 รัชกาลพระยาลิไท เรียกว่า "เมืองสระหลวง" ซึ่งมีสถานะเป็นหัวเมืองเอกของกรุงสุโขทัย
