Brief History
จังหวัดพังงาเดิมเชื่อวันว่าชื่อ "เมืองภูงา" ตามชื่อเขางาหรือเขาพังงาหรือกราภูงา หรือ พังกา (ภาษามลายู แปลว่า ป่าน้ำภูงา) ตั้งอยู่ในตัวจังหวัดพังงาปัจจุบัน ในสมัยก่อนเมืองภูงาขึ้นอยู่กับเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 2 ชื่อของเมืองภูงาได้ปรากฎอยู่ในทำเนียบข้าราชการเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นเมืองขึ้นฝ่ายกรมพระสุรัสวดีฝ่ายซ้าย เมืองภูงานี้อาจจะตั้งชื่อให้คล้องจองกับเมืองภูเก็ต และเหตุที่เมืองภูงากลายเป็นเมืองพังงานั้น สันนิษฐานกันว่าน่าจะเนื่องมาจากเมืองภูงาเป็นเมืองที่มีแร่อุดมสมบูรร์ มีชาวต่างชาติมาติดต่อซื้อขายแร่ดีบุกกันมาก และช่าวต่างชาติเหล่านี้คงออกเสียงเมืองภูงาเป็นเมืองพังงา เพราะแต่เดิมช่าวต่างชาติเขียนชื่อเมืองภูงาว่า Phunga หรือ Punga อ่านว่าภูงา หรือพังงา หรือ พังกา ก็ได้
