ชื่อเดิมของพื้นที่นี้คือ มนารา หรือ มนารอ ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า "หอคอย" ที่กลายมาจากคำว่า กัวลามนารา ที่มีความหมายว่า "กระโจมไฟ" หรือ "หอคอยที่ปากน้ำ" ส่วนชาวไทยที่นับถือศาสนาพุทธจะเรียกว่า บางนรา หรือ บางนาค
