Brief History
เป็นจังหวัดที่ตั้งอยู่ในตอนบนของภาคกลาง หรือบางหน่วยงานจัดให้อยู่ในตอนล่างของภาคเหนือ จึงได้รับสมญานามว่าเป็น "ประตูสู่ภาคเหนือ" มีชื่อในศิลาจารึกของสุโขทัย โดยเรียกว่าเมืองพระบาง เป็นเมืองหน้าด่านที่สำคัญในการทำศึกสงครามตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย
