จังหวัดจันทบุรีเป็นเมืองที่มีความสำคัญต่อประวัติศาสตร์ไทยอยู่ 3 ครั้ง คือ ครั้งที่ 1 สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีใช้จังหวัดจันทบุรีในการรวบรวมไพร่พลและเสบียงอาหาร ครั้งที่ 2 เกิดสงครามอานัมสยามยุทธในรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวและครั้งที่ 3 ฝรั่งเศสยึดเมืองจันทบุรีเป็นเมืองประกันหลังจากเกิดวิกฤตการณ์ปากน้ำ
