ในอดีตนั้นมีผู้คนอาศัยอยู่มานานหลายร้อยปี เพราะท้องที่ของอ่างทองเป็นที่ราบลุ่มลักษณะคล้ายอ่าง ไม่มีภูเขา ป่า หรือแร่ธาตุ ได้รับการหล่อเลี้ยงจากแม่น้ำ 2 สาย คือ แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาและแม่น้ำน้อย ซึ่งประชาชนส่วนใหญ่ได้อาศัยทำการเพาะปลูก อุปโภคบริโภค และคมนาคมตลอดมา
