Phuluang Wildlife Sanctuary, with its name meaning "the great mountain" or "the mountain of the king," was formed by the uplifting of the earth's surface, causing softer soil to wash down into lower areas. The general landscape consists of high plains, with cool weather year-round. It is located within the districts of Wang Saphung, Phu Ruea, Dan Sai, and Phuluang.
