Originally, the Pho Than sub-district was part of the Bang Plakod sub-district, but it was separated to form its own sub-district over 20 years ago. The name "Pho Than" comes from Wat Pho Than, where a Bodhi tree once stood. Unfortunately, the original Bodhi tree has died, but a new one has since grown in its place, hence the name "Pho Than." Today, Pho Than is a sub-district within the Ongkharak district and comprises nine villages: Ban Khmer Fang Tai, Ban Khlong 14, Ban Maha Wong, Ban Pho Than, Ban Lat Sa Ed, Ban Pak Ban, Ban Khmer Fang Nuea, Ban Ong Phad, and Ban Khlong Ton Tan.
