Wat Thung Sawang Chaiyaphum

Wat Thung Sawang Chaiyaphum

Sahapatan, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang Yasothon District

According to the chronicles of Yasothon written by Phra Ya Maha Amatyathibodi, it states that in the year 1825 BE, Lord Anuwong of Vientiane fought against the forces of Bangkok. His Majesty King Nangklao issued a royal command appointing Phra Ya Ratchasuphawadee as the commander of the troops, who then established a camp in Phan Phrao. When General Pichai, who had advanced ahead with his forces, suffered defeat at the hands of Lord Anuwong, Phra Ya Ratchasuphawadee retreated to Yasothon. He then performed the initial ceremony of cutting wood to create a shrine at Wat Thung Sawaeng Chai Phum. Later, Upathan Paeng, the acting governor of Yasothon, received a royal order to mobilize troops to assist in battles in Siem Reap, Prasat Pheach, and Battambang. Before leading the troops into combat, he also conducted a ceremony at the mound near Wat Thung Sawaeng Chai Phum. Upon achieving victory and returning, they recognized that the area of Non Thung was an excellent strategic position and thus constructed a stupa, dedicating it as a temple named Wat Chai Na Songkhram, also known as Wat Burapha Thitsararam. They enshrined a footprint of the Buddha brought from Wat Tai Si Mongkhon inside the stupa. However, this replica of the Buddha's footprint was later moved to Wat Sri Thammararam, and the stupa underwent renovations in the year 1931 BE.
