The ancient temple, a symbol of Buriram, has a long history that dates back to the Thonburi period. Legend has it that during this time, Chao Phraya Maha Kasat Surak led a campaign to suppress the rebellious ruler of Nang Rong, and he paused his troops at this site where there is a large pond. This pond is now believed to be a sacred body of water located within Wat Klang in Buriram. In 1990, the authorities officially designated Wat Klang Buriram as the first royal temple of the province.
