Mae Moh Mine

800 Moo 6, Mae Moh, Mae Moh.

From the coal mining site discovered in 1917, which holds about 630 million tons of coal and is approximately 40 million years old, it has transformed into a tourist attraction where the general public can visit and educate themselves about coal. The total mining area covers around 20,000 rai and has about 50 more years of usability. The site also hosts several power plants that use this type of coal as fuel. **Highlights to Explore:** - **Lignite Coal Study Center Museum (Mae Moh Mine):** This is one of the largest and most modern museums in Thailand, offering insights into the geology of the Mae Moh mine as well as its history and power generation technology. Visitors can enjoy presentations through 3D films and cutting-edge technology. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays, and has four daily sessions at 09:00, 10:30, 13:00, and 14:30. For more information, call 0 5425 4950-5. - **Botanical Garden:** This public park, developed from previously discarded land, is adorned with beautiful plant species. Additionally, it is home to a statue honoring King Rama VII, who graciously preserved the Mae Moh coal source. - **Viewpoint and Bua Tong Fields:** This artificial hill, created from excavated earth from the mining area, features the 84th Anniversary Commemoration Garden at its summit—a perfect viewpoint for enjoying stunning scenery, including the vibrant fields of Bua Tong flowers that bloom in bright yellow from November to mid-December. - **Slider Area:** A grassy slope that descends towards the golf course is located in front of the botanical garden's viewpoint building. Tourists can bring their boxes or sliding mats to enjoy sliding down the grassy hill—an activity that promises fun and shouldn’t be missed. Sliding mats are available for rent in front of the museum. - **Accommodation and Facilities:** The mine area includes 14 bungalows for EGAT staff at 600 baht each and 20 standard rooms for 400 baht. There is also an 18-hole driving range and clubhouse. For inquiries, contact the Mae Moh Power Plant's public relations office at 0 5425 4994 or visit maemohmine.egat.co.th for more details.
