Chiang Khong District is home to the Huak port, which serves as a permanent border crossing between Thailand and Laos, situated along the banks of the Mekong River. From here, visitors can see the picturesque town of Huay Xai in the Bokeo Province of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Thai tourists can cross into Laos by visiting the Chiang Khong District Office, providing two 1-inch photos, a copy of their national ID card, and a fee of 30 baht. The Laos border crossing fee is 90 baht, or travelers may opt to use a passport (no visa required). For international tourists, a visa is necessary and can be obtained from an embassy or at the Laos immigration checkpoint (which is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM). From this point, travelers can take a boat ride to Luang Prabang in Laos and return to Thailand via Nong Khai. For more information, you can contact the Chiang Khong immigration office at 0 5379 1663 or 0 5379 1332.
