Located in Ban Nam Sap, Tambon Samet, is the extinct volcano known as Khao Kadong. Rising 265 meters above sea level, this mountain was originally named “Phanom Kradong” in Khmer, which translates to “tortoise mountain” due to its shell-like appearance. The Khao Kradong Wildlife Sanctuary presents several interesting features, including the majestic Phra Suphattrabophit, a large golden seated Buddha statue that stands atop the Kradong mountain. In front of the statue is a spacious terrace that offers a clear panoramic view of Buriram city. The volcano's crater, estimated to be between 300,000 to 900,000 years old, currently forms a water basin. Visitors can enjoy walking trails around the crater and a suspension bridge that provides a high vantage point for sightseeing. The Naga Stairs, a cement stairway built in 1969 with 297 steps, leads from the base of Kradong Mountain to the summit for the purpose of worshiping Phra Suphattrabophit. Every year on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the fifth month, a traditional ceremony is held for ascending the mountain. Additionally, there is a road accessible for vehicles to drive up to the summit. For more information, please call 0 4463 7349.
