Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary

Nong Luang, Um Phang.

Within the Wildlife Sanctuary, there are several interesting attractions: - **Ti Lo Su Waterfall**: This magnificent limestone waterfall is situated at an elevation of 900 meters above sea level, where the Glo Toh River cascades over steep cliffs. With a flow that is strong year-round, the waterfall spans approximately 500 meters in width and drops around 300 meters in height. It is surrounded by lush, pristine rainforest. The name "Ti Lo Su" comes from the Karen language, where "Ti" or "Thi" means "water," "Lo" or "Law" means "fall," but "Su" doesn't have a direct translation. Therefore, "Su" is replaced with "Dum," which means "black," giving the waterfall its name, meaning "black waterfall." - **Getting There**: Travel via Highway 1090 (Umphang-Mae Sot) to kilometer marker 161 at Ban Mae Klong Mai, then turn right onto Highway 1288 (Ban Mae Klong Mai-Beng Khleng) until you reach the Dela checkpoint, where you turn left into the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. This section of the road requires a high-performance pickup truck or four-wheel drive. The total distance is about 50 kilometers. Note that during the rainy season, this route is closed to vehicle traffic due to difficult navigation and to allow the forest to regenerate. Tourists wishing to visit during this time must obtain permission from the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary officials. There are two ways to access the waterfall: 1. Rafting down the Mae Klong River from Umphang's sandbank takes about 3 hours, and then it’s a 10-kilometer trek to Ti Lo Su Waterfall, which takes an additional 3 hours on foot. 2. Hiking along the road from the Huai Nong Luang ranger station to the Ti Lo Su Waterfall, covering a distance of 25 kilometers in approximately 4 to 5 hours. - **Ti Lo Jo Waterfall**: Located just 3 kilometers from Umphang, this waterfall can be reached by rafting on the Mae Klong River, taking around 40 minutes. The waterfall tumbles from a height of 80 meters. - **Ti Lo Rae Waterfall**: This waterfall sits atop a rocky cliff, resembling a cave along the Mae Klong River. The strong stream flows down a sheer waterfall height of 80 meters, appealing to adventure-seeking nature enthusiasts. - **Getting There**: Take the Umphang-Ban Palata route starting from the Karen village of Palata. Rafting downstream on the Mae Klong River will take about 3 days. Tourists should prepare their own camping equipment and food. - **Ko Ta Waterfall**: A large and beautiful waterfall over 100 meters wide and 120 meters tall, cascading down in tiers and located in the Karen area of Ko Ta. - **Getting There**: There are two routes: 1. From Sab Huai Mae Lamung, walk or ride an elephant to the Karen village of Ko Ta, taking around 3 hours. 2. Take the route to Ti Lo Su Waterfall, turning left before reaching the Ti Lo Su ranger station. Travel a combined distance of 7 kilometers by car and walking for an additional 30 minutes to reach the waterfall. - **Pitu Khor Waterfall (Petto Lo Su Waterfall)**: Found on Doi Sam Muen, this waterfall plunges down a cliff with a height of approximately 500 meters. It is the source of the Mae Chan river. - **Getting There**: From Umphang, take the Umphang-Beng Khleng route, covering 60 kilometers in about 2 hours to the Karen village of Kuile Tor. From the village, a hike along the mountains and streams will take about 3-4 hours to reach Pitu Khor Waterfall. Tourists are advised to contact local tour companies for assistance.
