Located in the Taung Ngoy district, within the Phu Phan mountain range, this area spans across the Muang Sakon Nakhon district, Kok Si Suphan district, Taung Ngoy district in Sakon Nakhon Province, Na Kae district in Nakhon Phanom Province, and Dong Luang and Khamsa Khi districts in Mukdahan Province. Covering an area of approximately 825 square kilometers (or 517,850 rai), it was designated a royal forest park in honor of His Majesty the King on July 28, 1988. The general forest condition is characterized by elevated plains interspersed with sandstone mountains. The vegetation includes deciduous dipterocarp forests, dry evergreen forests, and moist evergreen forests. Notable flora consists of timber trees like teak and brown mahogany, while wildlife includes species such as sambar deer and wild dogs. Among the noteworthy attractions within the park is the Huay Wat Reservoir, located about 500 meters from the park headquarters. This reservoir was created from a dam constructed under the royal initiative of the King. On the right bank’s pavilion, visitors can see uniquely shaped rock formations and two waterfalls flowing into the Huay Wat Reservoir. The highest waterfall in the park, called Nam Tok Kham Nam, stands at 25 meters. It is located 1.8 kilometers away from the park headquarters, and can be viewed from the dam's crest looking south. Phu Phai L, another highlight, offers scenic viewpoints. The cliffs there feature rock carvings estimated to be around 3,000 years old. To reach these destinations, take Highway 2339 (Taung Ngoy - Sriwichai), then turn left into Ban Na Ang - Muang Kham, passing through Ban Phon Bok and Ban Phon Paeng to Ban Na Phang, which is 5 kilometers from Taung Ngoy district, allowing access by car. The Phu Phaya Taung Ngoy site is visible from the Ban Huay Wat - Kok Klang route approximately 7 kilometers from the park headquarters. Here, visitors can find sandstone formations resembling turtles about to submerge, thought to signify an area of fertility, hence the name Taung Ngoy village. Dusita Plain is a spacious rocky area that bursts into bloom with various flowers during the late rainy season, particularly the dusita flower which is purple, alongside silver buttons and dew flowers. The park has built walkways to let visitors admire the natural beauty without disturbing these delicate plants. Other attractions include the Phi Phu Phan Cave, Saowapa Cave, Dong Noi Reservoir, and Pra Wat Cave. The entrance fee is 20 baht for Thai adults and 10 baht for children, while foreign adults pay 100 baht and children 50 baht. Thai tourists receive a 50% discount from Monday to Friday, except during public holidays, from July 1 to December 31, 2015, costing only 10 baht for adults and 5 baht for children. The park offers accommodation in cabins and tent areas available for 1,800 to 4,000 baht. To get there from Sakon Nakhon city, follow the Sakon Nakhon - Nakhon Phanom highway for about 14 kilometers, turn right and continue for another 12 kilometers to reach Taung Ngoy district. From there, you will travel approximately 6 more kilometers to the park headquarters. Alternatively, you can take the Sakon Nakhon - Kalasin highway for about 5 kilometers, then turn left onto Highway 2339 and travel approximately 35 kilometers to reach the park. From Taung Ngoy district, head along the Taung Ngoy - Sriwichai road for 5 kilometers to Ban Muang - Na Ang, then continue through Ban Phon Bok, Phon Paeng, and Ban Na Phang in sequence for a total distance of 35 kilometers before reaching Phu Phai L. The road from Ban Na Phang to the cliff is well-paved and features stairs leading to the summit. Various scenic viewpoints along the route are adorned with sandstone formations, some resembling resting shelters or seating platforms.
