The Turtle Village, located in Ban Kok, Mancha Khiri District, Khon Kaen Province, is approximately 50 kilometers away from the city center. This ancient village, established around 1767, is home to a unique species of turtle known as the "Turtle Peg" (Yellow Turtle). The villagers believe that the location of the village is the dwelling place of the spirit named Chaopoo Fah Rangum or Chaopoo Mhaesak, who has turtles as sacred animals. Therefore, the residents and the turtles have coexisted harmoniously for generations. The Turtle Peg, also known as the Yellow Turtle or Candle Turtle, is a terrestrial species that cannot live in water. They are characterized by their large yellow-brown shells. Many can be found lounging under the houses, waiting for food from the villagers, while others roam the streets of the village—a common sight in the morning and evening. It is advisable to avoid driving through the village or to do so with great caution, as these turtles often wander across the roads. A survey conducted by the villagers reveals that the turtle population has been increasing each year, with over 2,000 currently residing in the area. Consequently, food supplies in the "Don Turtle" region have become insufficient, prompting the turtles to search for sustenance in nearby villages. No one dares to harm these turtles, as there are stories of individuals from elsewhere who caught turtles to boil for food, only to suffer fatal consequences immediately after. This has fostered a community commitment to protecting the turtles.
