Udon Sunshine Fragrant Orchid Garden

127 Moo 5, Kamolwattana Alley, Udon-Nong Samrong Road, Ban Leuam, Mueang Udon Thani.

About 2 kilometers from the city center, along the bypass road near the intersection to Nong Khai province, there is a turnoff to Nong Samrong close to a golf course, marked by a sign for the Udorn Sunshine Orchid Garden. From the early dawn until around midday, the fragrance of the orchids fills the air so intensely that it can even be extracted for perfume production. The garden not only sells orchids but also various fragrances at both the garden itself and local handicraft shops in Udon Thani. The owner and inventor, Mr. Pradit Kamphuenphun, has several interesting projects in natural research and agriculture. The Udorn Sunshine Orchid is a renowned tourist attraction in Udon Thani, being the closest to the city center, which makes it particularly appealing for both Thai and international tourists eager to experience its unique beauty—said to be found nowhere else in the world. This orchid, which is a hybrid variety of Vanda, was created in 1977 by a passionate amateur gardener, Mr. Pradit Kamphuenphun, aged 57, residing at 127 Soi Klom Phatana, Ban Lueam, Mueang District, Udon Thani. The Udorn Sunshine Orchid typically starts blooming around 1987, emitting a distinctly delightful scent reminiscent of Thai perfume. This unique fragrance lasts from early morning until about noon, with its aroma fluctuating during this period until the flower wilts. In addition to its special fragrance, the orchid can change color into three different hues based on temperature: it blooms a vibrant red when the temperature is between 10-15 degrees Celsius, gold at 15-20 degrees, and bright yellow at higher temperatures, all while maintaining its delightful scent. This orchid has remarkably long-lasting blooms, remaining on the plant for about 60 days without cutting; once cut, the flowers last about 15 days. If the weather is particularly cool, the cut flowers can last up to 25 days, with their fragrance persisting for about 10 days before gradually fading. Currently, the Udorn Sunshine Orchid has been registered for copyright with the International Orchid Society in the UK. For more information, you can inquire at 0 4224 2475.
