Nakhon Phanom Airport was originally the site of a United States military base during the Indochina War. After the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1975, the airport came under the care of the Royal Thai Air Force's 238th Squadron. Subsequently, it was repurposed for commercial use, with the Air Force's hangar being converted into a passenger terminal.
