Wat Chaeng

Sapphasit Road in Ubon Ratchathani City.

Wat Chaeng is an ancient temple located on Sapphasit Road in the Muang Nai sub-district of Ubon Ratchathani Province. According to historical records, it was established in 1888 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, under the initiative of Chao Ratchabut (Nokham), one of the four governors of Ubon Ratchathani at that time. Within Wat Chaeng, the most significant structure is the Ubosot, which was completed around 1912. This building is praised for its beautiful shape and features authentic local woodcarving art, which is becoming increasingly rare to find. The Ubosot of Wat Chaeng, or Sim Wat Chaeng, exemplifies Isaan architectural style, with a rectangular layout measuring 6 meters wide, 15 meters long, and 10 meters high, facing east. The building is constructed of brick and mortar, with three windows on each side and a solid wall at the back. Access to the building is exclusively via the front stairs, with the balustrades sculpted into the shape of crouching crocodiles. The gable features intricate wooden carvings combining local and Central Thai styles, including an image of Phra In riding on the Erawan elephant at the top. The roof of the Ubosot is a single-tier structure that was originally covered with wooden tiles but later replaced with earthen tiles. Roof adornments include a pair of bird wings without the Naga serpent, a finial called 'cho fa', leaf ornaments, and Isaan-style swan tails with a unique feature of a head of Naga where the top curls into a flame-like design. The Ubosot has undergone continuous restoration efforts aimed at preserving its original state. With its stunning authentic Isaan artwork and historical significance, this building has become a focal point for visitors traveling to Wat Chaeng in Ubon Ratchathani. It has also been awarded a certificate of honor at the "Architect 30" exhibition from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Visitors can reach the temple by private car or take public transportation, including shared taxis (Songthaews) on routes 1 and 3.
