The Sim of Wat Sanuanwaira Phattana Ram is located within Wat Sanuanwaira Phattana Ram, Village No. 1, Ban Huanong, Hua Nong Subdistrict, Ban Phai District, Khon Kaen Province. This Sim was built in 1917 and is constructed from brick and cement, featuring a closed design with 3 rooms. The rectangular plan measures 5 meters wide and 7.5 meters long. It has three sacred stones with a pedestal for a Ubosot (ordination hall) placed at eight points. The foundation of the Sim is elevated about 1 meter off the ground with an ornate base. There is a staircase leading up from the east, adorned with two beautifully crafted Naga (serpent) figures. The front wall is designed with an arched doorway influenced by Vietnamese craftsmanship, flanked by two arched window openings. The western wall is solid, while the northern and southern walls are intricately carved with half-circle arched windows arranged in two tiers, each with one opening. The exterior walls feature murals depicting the story of Sin Sai (Sangsilpayai) and scenes from the Narak realm, while the interior showcases illustrations from the Vessantara Jataka, painted in 1953. On the western wall, there is a pedestal housing an exquisite Buddha statue in the Mara Victory posture, crafted by local artisans. The roof is a single gable design, constructed of wood and embellished with decorative elements like the engraved finial, "Raka," and the lion's tail, all made of wood, with a corrugated metal roof. The exterior is supported by 18 pillars that sustain the surrounding verandah. The murals on the outside start from the southern wall, progressing to the west, then north, and finally returning to the east, concluding again on the western wall. The narrative draws from the tale of Sin Sai (Sangsilpayai), while the interior content derives from the Vessantara Jataka. The artistic value of the murals lies in their emotional expression and the artisan's creative freedom, which lacks the rigid structure commonly found in royal craftsmanship. Occasionally, the scenes overlap, and some significant moments may be overlooked, or imaginative scenarios are interwoven with the artist's knowledge of bygone eras. Viewers of the murals should ideally possess some familiarity with the Isan folklore, as this will enhance their experience and enjoyment in piecing together the narratives. The site was registered as a historical site in the Royal Gazette, volume 118, special section 127, on December 21, 2001, covering an area of 1 rai and 91.17 square wah.
