Wat Sri Thammaram was first constructed around 1852 during the reign of King Rama IV. The temple's establishment was rooted in the sorrow following the death of the family of Phra Uparachabutr and Chao Kham Muan, who were relatives of Phra Sunthorn Rajawong, the third ruler of the city of Yothasanth. Out of deep grief for their tragic fate, the city ruler decided to create this temple as a memorial to their memory, as they met their end through execution in the “fire prison.” This history is reflected in the temple's name. After the temple's construction, it underwent several name changes. In 1873, Phra Sunthorn Rajawong (Chao Men) led the citizens of Yothasanth in restoring the temple, renaming it Wat Sri Thammha-Hai-Sok. During a visit by His Royal Highness Prince Damrong Rajanubhab to Yothasanth, he graciously renamed the temple Wat Asokaram. Later, Phra Maha Samana Chao, Prince Wachirayan Vorarat, proposed another name: Wat Sraang Sok Kasem San. Finally, in 1957, Phra Kru Pisan Silakoon (Boonsing Sihnahto), who was the abbot at that time, undertook restoration efforts and officially renamed the temple once more to Wat Sri Thammaram, a name it has retained to this day.
