Wat Mahathat, originally a royal monastery of the meditation tradition, held great significance during the Ayutthaya period. It was constructed by King Borommarachathirat II (also known as King Sam Prasart) and underwent several renovations throughout various eras. However, it eventually fell into disrepair and is considered a ruined temple. This decline began after the second sacking of Ayutthaya in 1767, which marked the end of its prominence. Now, over 200 years later, the temple remains a captivating historical site despite the extensive decay of its ancient structures and artifacts. Yet, the remnants still provide compelling evidence of the exquisite and grand architectural artistry that once characterized this significant monastery.
