Wat Phra That Ha Duang

Li Subdistrict, Li District.

It is assumed that this area is the ancient city of Li, as evidenced by the remnants of walls and moats arranged in a row. This temple is home to a group of five pagodas, and every year on April 20th, a tradition of pouring water over the five sacred relics takes place. According to legend, Princess Chamthewi, the ruler of the city of Hariphunchai, heard from the people of Li that five luminous orbs had been frequently seen. Intrigued, she decided to visit the site herself. One night, she observed bright lights from the five orbs hovering over five mounds of earth. Upon inquiring about their significance, she learned that they were the holy water (the water from the Buddha’s hands) of the Enlightened One, who had once washed His hands, allowing the water to flow from His five fingertips onto the ground. Moved by this revelation, the princess built a pagoda to enshrine the five mounds. Thus, every year on April 20th, the tradition of pouring water over the five sacred relics continues.
