Originally named "Wat Mai," this temple is located within the boundaries of Phra Nakhon, adjacent to Baworin Niwet Road and Phra Sumet Road, along the northern city wall. The area where this temple was built was once an empty space within the vicinity of the Front Palace. His Royal Highness Prince Maha Sakdipolsep (Buddhist Era 2367-2375) established Wat Mai in this area following the funeral of the Minor Royal Consort, the mother of Princess Daravadi, a consort of Prince Maha Sakdipolsep. Prince Maha Sakdipolsep, originally named Prince Arunothai, was born on October 21, 2328 BE, and was the 17th son of King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke and the Major Royal Consort, Nui, the daughter of Phra Ya Nakorn (Phat). At the age of 23, he was graciously appointed to the title of Krom Muen Sakdipolsep, overseeing the Ministry of Defense. In 2363 BE, during the time when Burmese forces were preparing to attack Thailand, King Phutthaloetla Naphalai issued a royal decree assigning Prince Maha Sakdipolsep and Prince Muen Jetsadabodhin to lead troops and defend the western border towns. Due to their previous military collaboration and his trust in them, when Prince Jetsadabodhin ascended the throne as King Nangklao, he appointed Prince Maha Sakdipolsep as the Vice King. He held the title of Somdet Phra Borom Raja Krom Muen Sakdipolsep from 2367 BE until his death in 2375 BE, serving as the Prince of the Front Palace for eight years. He passed away on May 1, 2375 BE. During his lifetime, Prince Maha Sakdipolsep established two important temples: "Wat Baworn Sutthavas," also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Front Palace, built within the grounds of the Palace to serve as a royal temple similar to Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram located within the Grand Palace. The other temple he built was "Wat Baworniwet," constructed in the northern area of Phra Nakhon, close to Wat Rangsithuthavas, established by Prince Isananupruk since the reign of King Rama II. Construction of Wat Baworniwet began after the funeral of the Minor Royal Consort, the consort in the palace of His Royal Highness Phra Mahasurasinhath. Initially, the temple's construction commenced with the ubosot, designed as a four-gabled structure, featuring a long front gable, with shorter side and rear gables. The area was consecrated only at the front. A large metal Buddha statue known as "Phra Suwannakhet," depicting the Buddha in a subduing Mara posture and of U Thong artistic style, was brought from Wat Sa Taphaan in Phetchaburi and enshrined as the principal Buddha image in the ubosot. This information is derived from the illustrated book on the stupas of Wat Baworniwet.
