Wat Chalong is a must-visit for anyone looking to pay their respects to Luang Phor Cham. He is a renowned abbot known for his expertise in herbal medicine and treating various ailments, particularly for casting splints on patients with broken bones. He gained fame and has a multitude of disciples. Most travelers to Phuket make a stop here to seek blessings for good fortune. One notable part of Luang Phor Cham's history recounts events from 1876 during the reign of King Rama V. He assisted the people of Phuket in their struggle against the "Ahng Yi" – a group of miners known for causing chaos and violence, threatening to take control of the town. During this tumultuous time, Luang Phor presented white cloth headbands to the villagers as talismans to protect them from danger, inspiring confidence and boosting morale among the locals. He used Wat Chalong as a stronghold, akin to a fortress for the resistance, ultimately leading to their victory over the Ahng Yi. Upon learning of these events, King Rama V bestowed upon Luang Phor Cham the honorary title of Phra Kru Visutthivongsa Jangya Munī, appointing him as the highest religious authority in Phuket at that time. The temple was subsequently named Wat Chai Tararam thereafter, solidifying its place in history and spirituality.
